What Is a Giclée Print? A Guide to Fine Art Printing

If you've been browsing the Doodlicious shop, you may have noticed that some of my artwork is now available as Giclée prints. But what exactly does "Giclée" mean, and why is it considered the gold standard for fine art printing?

So, what is a Giclée print?

Pronounced "zhee-clay", the word Giclée comes from the French word meaning "to spray", referring to the way specialist printers use microscopic droplets of ink to create incredibly detailed artwork.

Unlike standard posters or high-street prints, Giclée prints are produced with professional archival pigment inks on premium fine-art paper. This process creates exceptional colour accuracy, crisp detail and beautiful depth, making them the preferred choice for artists, galleries and collectors around the world.

Why choose a Giclée print?

There are several reasons why Giclée prints stand out:

  • Outstanding colour and detail – Every line, texture and colour is faithfully reproduced.

  • Archival quality – Using fade-resistant pigment inks, Giclée prints are designed to last for many decades when displayed and cared for correctly.

  • Premium paper – The luxurious fine art paper enhances the richness and character of each illustration.

  • Gallery standard – The same quality of print you'll often find in galleries and exhibitions.
