Why Trowbridge is One of Wiltshire's Most Underrated Market Towns
The Old Town Hall in all its glory
When people think of Wiltshire, places like Bath, Bradford on Avon, Avebury or Salisbury often spring to mind first. Yet right in the heart of the county sits a town that deserves far more attention than it gets – Trowbridge.
As Wiltshire's county town, Trowbridge has a fascinating history, a thriving creative community and some wonderfully distinctive architecture. It's a place that rewards those who take the time to slow down, wander its streets and look a little closer.
One of my favourite things about Trowbridge is the mix of old and new. Historic buildings sit alongside independent businesses, while reminders of the town's industrial past can be found around almost every corner. The town was once famous for its woollen cloth industry and became known as the "Manchester of the West" thanks to its thriving mills and manufacturing heritage.
Many visitors are surprised by the number of beautiful buildings hidden within the town centre. The Town Hall is an impressive landmark that dominates the centre of town, while nearby you'll find the Blind House, one of Trowbridge's most recognisable historic buildings. Court Street, with its characterful architecture and independent businesses, is another favourite spot for locals and visitors alike.
The River Biss also winds its way through the town, providing a quieter side to Trowbridge that many people overlook. Combined with the regular markets, local events and growing arts scene, it helps create a town with a strong sense of identity and community spirit.
As an illustrator, Trowbridge offers endless inspiration. From historic buildings and hidden architectural details to bustling streets and local landmarks, there's always something interesting to capture on paper. Many of my illustrations celebrate the places that make Trowbridge unique, helping people reconnect with familiar views and treasured memories.
Whether you're visiting Wiltshire for the first time or you've lived here for years, Trowbridge is well worth exploring. Take a stroll through the town centre, look up at the buildings, discover a few hidden corners, and you might just find yourself seeing the county town in a completely different light.
